The anticipation around The Game Awards has been intense, notably after host Geoff Keighley shared a mysterious photo of a desert monolith. The secret is finally answered. Larian Studios is creating a completely new Divinity game.
Titled simply Divinity, the game was debuted with a bold trailer packed with intense imagery, from a burning man to scenes of revelry and the very descent into chaos.
A Different Direction
Anyone hoping for Divinity Original Sin 3, this is not that. The studio stated ahead of time that a follow-up to its beloved RPGs is not being worked on now.
However, the developer referred to this new Divinity as a next chapter of the core franchise. This phrasing hints that the team could be designing a faster-paced experience rather than another tactical title. At this moment, this is speculation, as only a cinematic trailer is available.
A Pillar of Modern RPGs
The Divinity series is highly rated and arguably it pioneered the recent resurgence of complex computer role-playing games. These games are known for intricate stories, choice-driven narratives, and complex character building—traits that recently found massive success in games like Baldur's Gate 3.
While its universe is familiar fare, what truly sets Divinity apart is the remarkable agency granted to the player.
Where many modern RPGs have pared back options, Divinity is packed with specialized paths that are viable with a specific type of character with a unique decision path.
The series is also famously flexible, allowing players to find creative solutions both in story and combat. Most missions can be approached in a variety of manners, frequently in unexpected fashion.
- You might find an answer because you remembered something a dog told you.
- Or, you could overcome an obstacle by using the world itself in a clever way.
The Journey Continues
It is these creative systems that have cemented the series to declare games like Divinity Original Sin 2 as a top-tier role-playing games in history. Now, the RPG community can anticipate another adventure in this groundbreaking franchise.
