The fast bowler Expected to Feature a Major Role in the Ashes

Pat Cummins bowling

Pat Cummins has taken 309 wickets in 71 five-day games with an average of 22.10.

The Australian selection chief Bailey has stated that captain Pat Cummins will be a central figure in the forthcoming England-Australia contest.

Speculation had been growing that the 32-year-old might be unavailable due to a persistent back stress problem that had not yet healed.

Initial reports from team management suggested no official announcement had been made regarding his involvement, with the Test matches kicking off on 21 November in the WACA.

He revealed that the captain is progressing and felt positive about the prospects of taking part.

"We're aware that the window is narrowing and various factors around that, not only the back issue, but further aspects," he commented.

"The outlook is good. We firmly believe that he will feature a key capacity. Ideally it's the first Test. Otherwise, we'll reassess."

Past Concerns

The captain missed the white-ball matches against both Asian and Trans-Tasman rivals in the previous weeks after scans revealed a lumbar bone stress.

Previous incidents include of back injuries, with recurrences in several earlier campaigns leading to absences from three Australian summers in a short span.

The bowler mentioned he would be proactive in his approach in his rehabilitation process to make the squad for the Ashes.

Bailey noted that there was no confirmation if the captain had resumed bowling as part of his comeback but acknowledged it was "pressing" for him to regain fitness for the first Test.

Backup Options

If he's unavailable, veteran batsman Smith will assume leadership.

Versatile player Green was excluded lately from Australia's squad for their limited-overs matches against the subcontinent side as a safety move because of soreness in his side.

The selector characterized it as a "slight concern and mentioned that Green will play in the Sheffield Shield, so will be "well-prepared to deliver overs."

"We put so much time has gone into building out the plan for him to take part for the opening match as an batting and bowling option," the selector detailed.

"His involvement was limited to the starting games anyway. The way he swings the bat in limited-overs, even if it just sets him back for 24 more hours, the choice was made to approach this more conservatively."
